Rainbow || Manicure Weekend

Good afternoon everyone!

This is a quick post before I leave for the weekend! Sorry, there won't be a polish review for this week. I did pick up some new polishes this past week but you're going to have to wait :)

Since the sun is coming out and it's officially my start to summer vacation I thought I would go with something fun! Plus I didn't know what colour I wanted to paint my nails so this was an easy solution. For some of the colours, I had to use a white base coat so that the colours can pop.

White - OPI "Alpine Snow"
Red - OPI "I Eat Mainely Lobster"
Orange - Maybelline Colorshow "Sweet Clementine"
Yellow - Sally Hansens Complete Salon "Yellow Kitty"
Green - Essie "The More the Merrier"
Blue - Sally Hansen Smooth and Perfect "Air"

Wasn't able to clean up around my nails as much as I want to. Ahh it shows up so much on pictures!

To all my Canadian readers - have a great long weekend and "Happy Canada Day"!

Summer Quinoa Salad || Eatz

It's night time!

Sorry for not posting this past week. It's been hectic! Last week was the last week for the students at the school that I work at. It was sad to hear the students say their last byes before they left for their summer holidays. This week is my last week at the school - finishing up on reports, cleaning up the resource room, last minute staff meetings, etc.

Tomorrow, a fellow staff member (who's also my Grade 1 teacher) invited us to her and her husband's place for a potluck. I'm not a fan of potlucks. Now don't get me wrong; I love the different food that people bring, sharing it with one another and spending time chatting away until the sun goes down. My only problem about potlucks is my indecisiveness to pick what to bring. This time I was very good about this and knew exactly what I could bring. This is an original recipe by moi! I've made this salad a couple times but I usually made just enough for two lunch portions. I eyeballed it and it was just the right size for a potluck!

I love this salad! It's light and healthy tasting (but it doesn't taste like cardboard)!

All right, looks like I got all my ingredients. There are a few things that are missing in the picture but you get the gist. Let's get cooking!

1. Heat up 4 cups water in a large sauce pan. Add a dash of salt to help it boil and add some flavour to the quinoa. Once water bubbles, add quinoa into water and let it re-boil. When you see the water bubble, turn down the heat to medium and put a lid over it. Check it every so often to make sure that it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan. Quinoa ratio is 1:4. For every 1 cup of uncooked quinoa, 4 cups of cooked rice will be produces. So make sure your sauce pan is big enough to handle 8 cups!  It's ready when all the water is absorbed and the quinoa is fluffy. Turn off heat and take it off the stove to cool down. Set aside.

2. While the quinoa is cooking, prepare your edamame beans and cucumbers. For the edamame beans, I suggest you buy the individual beans in a bag in the frozen aisle. Mine are from Costco; they were on sale but they needed to be de-podded. It you have the individual beans, warm them up in the microwave and set aside. If you got the ones in the microwave baggies, follow the instructions on the box. Once heated, set aside to cool down. Then get shucking! Set aside. I wanted the cucumber to be small cubes; just big enough to get a little crunch in each bit. Choose your way of cutting; as long as they are the size of edamame beans.

3. Your cilantro is up next! Make sure you clean your cilantro thoroughly! You don't want bits of dirt in your salad. Best way to clean them is to soak them into a bath of cold water. This lets the cilantro swim in the water and the dirt to sink. Shake out the excess water. I don't like a lot of stem so I cut some of it off. Coarsely chop cilantro and set aside.

4. Heat up a pan and add 1 Tbs of extra virgin olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add in your edamame beans and the cranberries. Lightly sauté and season with salt and pepper. Take off the stove before it becomes mushy and yellow. We want it to keep it's crunch and vibrant shade of green!

5. With a large bowl, mix all your components together. Add in 5 Tbs of extra virgin olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Mix well. Best served chilled. I put mine in the fridge overnight before serving. And voilĂ !

Hope you like this recipe! Try it out and leave a comment!

Good Eatz!

Racerback Workout Shirt || DIY

Hi Everyone!

It's super sunny today and I thought I would (and should) go for a run. I changed into my shorts and then I looked for me go-to workout tank but then I realized that it was in the wash. Since the sun is blazing hot, I knew that if I wore a regular t-shirt I would not only sweat profusely but I would get a  serious farmer's tan (I bake like crazy). Then I remembered that I watched a couple of DIY videos on YouTube and I thought I would give it a shot. This DIY is based off of Cassey Ho's and TheSorryGirls' own DIY racerback tanks. Alright here we go!

First you need to pick out an old t-shirt. I used my old high school gym shirt for this DIY but I would recommend you find a shirt that has a bit of a stretch (ie. cotton jersey); that way you get a more polished finished.

Step 1: Cut sleeves off. You want to keep the shape of the arm hole but just start maybe an inch or so below the sleeve. The lower you cut, the bigger the hole will be. I suggest you start off small and then try on the shirt; if you want it a bigger hole, take it off and cut again.

Step 2: Flip the t-shirt over to the back side. Cut the hole bigger only in the back! This will give an effect of a racerback. This is how I started out. I should of taken a picture of all adjustments to the back side because the hole grew :))

Step 3: Cut the collar off. For now just cut the rim of the collar.

Step 4: Separate the top of the back from the bottom. What you should be left with is a loop at the top and a flap on the bottom. I realized that I had forgot to take a photo before I cut it all up. With the flap, cut it into three vertical strips until you hit the same level as the bottom of the arm pit. Braid them together and stitch with some needle and thread

Step 5: Take the loop and find the center middle of it. Then attach to the braid with needle and thread.

Step 6: To make it neater and hid the stitches that we made, use an extra piece of t-shirt (I used a part of the collar) and wrap it around the stitches. Sew into place.

After you are done with that step, it's time to fix up any jagged edges or even change the neck and hemline. I decided to cut a deeper neck line but left the hemline the same. Stretch out the shirt and some of your cuts will begin to curl inwards or outwards -- really cool hem effect.

Here's the final product! Haha my hair is a mess - I had to put it up quickly because it was sooooo hot!

Try it out. It took a lot of patience and time but the final product looks pretty good to me!
Enjoy the sun everyone!

Maybelline Colorshow Sweet Clementine and Coral Crush || Manicure Weekend

Happy Saturday Everyone!

Sorry for not posting this past week :( It was a super busy week and last weekend I went out with some good girl friends and did a mini-retreat at the Fairmont Vancouver Hotel. I thought about a post about it but I decided not to since it was a retreat and not a vacation. It's June and I got a week and a half left before my summer vacation begins (pros to working at an elementary school)! I'm definitely hoping to post more next month. Okay enough on the update. Here's this week's colour choices!

Side Note: Excuse the short nails. I had the bad case of nail biting when I was watching the finale of Top Chef Canada. Boo to short nails! Back to the review :)

I usually like to have one colour for all my nails and maybe the odd time where I do some nail art. But recently, I've been really loving the accent nail! This week, I got two colours from Maybelline's Colorshow Nail Laquer series. My main colour is 210 Sweet Clementine and the accent colour is 190 Coral Crush. Like I said in my last, neons are great for the summer and I really needed to get started on reviewing the neons that I currently own.

I have a few polishes from the Colorshow series and overall I'm quiet satisfied with them. #1 reason why I got them was because they were so cheap! I picked them up at Walmart for just a few bucks. #2 reason I went for this series is their range of colours. Even though they just started this series not too long ago (maybe a year), they have a huge variety of colours from neons, nudes, pastels, etc. They first started off with the standard polish finish but then came out with amazing finishes - creams, denims, metallics, and shredded. I just looked at Maybelline's website and looked up my colours just to see what they look like online. Do not be fooled! Both of the Sweet Clementine and Coral Crushes are neons but the website did not do justice; both of them looked more like pastels than neons. I would go to a drugstore of supermarket to stock up instead of buying online.

Moving on! For both of these colours, I needed at least 3 coats for a non-streaky finish. Dry time between coats is just a few minutes. Make sure you get that top coat on because it will definitely chip (even though they advertise that it is chip-resistant).

Alright that's it from me! Make sure you leave a comment! I want to know what you guys want from me!

Revlon Provence and Sally Hansen Strobe Light || Manicure Weekend

Hi Peeps,

It's June!!! The sun is starting to come out; it is time to dust off your sandals and bring out the shorts! I've been looking at the colour trends for this summer and it's all about the brights and neons. I've been looking at my collection and my colours are all dark or pastels (sad face). So in the next few weeks, I might just pick up some crazy colours for the summer. So stay tuned for that!

Today, I'm featuring two nail polishes: Revlon's Provence (040) and Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails Xtreme Strobe Light (002). I love this combination and is my go-to.

I am a huge fan of Revlon's colorstay series and I have a few different colours from them. Here are just a few reasons why. First their range of colours is amazing; they got the dark hues to the pastels to the brights and neons. So if you are looking for any colour, they have a good range of them. Secondly is their applicator; it collects a good amount of polish and it's easy to control when applying. The brush also fans out when applying and it gives a good even coat. Thirdly is the formula. Everyone loves a good smooth formula; I always have trouble with drugstore brands and having a 'goopey' consistency. Revlon did a great job with their colorstay line; it's thick enough to only need two coats and dries quickly. And lastly is the longevity. I usually need to apply a new colour every 3-4 days but not with this line - I can go without a fix for about 5-6 days (it may chip here and there)! Provence is a really nice lavender (not lilac) shade - soft and feminine and can match with almost any outfit.

I won't say much about the Strobe Light. It's a Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear polish: decently price and not a bad starter nail polish brand. This one's got pink and holographic like glitter and I usually just add a few coats on top of my base colour. You can definitely layer it up and get a nice solid accent nail of glitter. I usually don't do it because (a) I'm lazy and (b) glitter is a pain to take off.
